University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) is one of the top universities in China, with the first independent medical device college and the oldest medical device discipline. It has doctoral and postdoctoral mobile workstation in Biomedical Engineering. Since 2006, it has been set up the first undergraduate training program in rehabilitation engineering in the world. In February 2020, it was approved to set up the first new undergraduate program of rehabilitation engineering in China.

In recent years, the discipline of rehabilitation engineering in USST has gotten a fast development relying on the Institute of Rehabilitation Engineering and Technology. Nowadays, there are two provincial-level scientific research platforms, “Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Assistive Devices” (SERCAD) and “Key Laboratory of Neural-functional Information and Rehabilitation Engineering of the Ministry of Civil Affairs”.

The rehabilitation engineering team of USST has achieved a series of outstanding outcomes on rehabilitation engineering training, scientific research, and social services. Together with its reputation and influence, the rehabilitation engineering team has become the largest high-level research-based on rehabilitation engineering in China. Meanwhile, USST has become the supporting institution for academic organizations in the field of rehabilitation, including Rehabilitation Engineering Specialized Committee of Shanghai Biomedical Engineering society, Specialized Committee of China Rehabilitation Devices, and Committee of Rehabilitation Robotics of SIAER (Shanghai Strategic Innovation Alliance of Electrophysiology and Rehabilitation Technology). USST is also the vice-chairman unit of Rehabilitation Devices Specialized Committee of Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering. In December 2017, USST, as an affiliated unit, established the largest academic organization of industry-university-research medicine of rehabilitation engineering in China—the special committee for technical transformation and industrial promotion of China Rehabilitation Medical Association (CARM). And now, USST is the president unit of the Coalition of Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology of Asia (CREATe Asia).

USST initiated and co-hosted the most influential rehabilitation engineering conferences of Asia in China two times, which are i-CREATe 2010 and i-CREATe 2018. USST also co-sponsored and co-organized the first international conference on rehabilitation medicine engineering in China and the first China (Shanghai) rehabilitation devices, technology and industry development forum. In addition, USST is also one of the founding institutes of the first rehabilitation engineering journal in China named “Journal of International Rehabilitation Engineering and Devices”.

Now Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Assistive Devices has a total of 67 people, including 18 professors, 27 associate professors, 50 of whom hold Doctors degrees. The rehabilitation engineering team has a core team which contains 27 people, including 8 professors, 12 associate professors, and 7 lecturers who are all majored in rehabilitation engineering. This wonderful team has developed a series of innovative rehabilitation devices and technologies. The team mainly conducts research in three fields: basic research on neuromodulation and neuro-electrophysiology, basic research on applications of biomechanics and intelligent motion perception, and application research on rehabilitation robots. The emphasis is on the application of intelligent rehabilitation equipment and systems, including three major directions: neural rehabilitation robot, rehabilitation nursing, and assistive robot, and intelligent prosthesis. It has published over 120 papers in SCI/EI journals, and over 80 patents in the recent 5 years have been authorized, such as the upper limb rehabilitation robots, intelligent nursing bed, intelligent electric wheelchairs, intelligent functional electrical stimulation system, and upper limb prosthesis with dynamic electrical control technology. The total amount of patent transfer has been over tens of millions of RMB, which tops us among research institutions.

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, Liu Binjie, then director of the Education, Science, Culture and Health Committee of the National People’s Congress, and Wan Gang, Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, gave full affirmation and praise after inspecting the lab results.

Government and industry leaders of the Shanghai Municipal Government, the Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine, the China Association of Rehabilitation Devices, and the National Rehabilitation Aids Research Center visited the laboratory. It has established exchanges and cooperation with nearly 20 world-class rehabilitation robotics laboratories, including Harvard University, Columbia University, MIT, and Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. In recent years, dozens of the world's top industry experts have come to the laboratory for exchanges and visits.

With the support of leaders at all levels and industry colleagues, the Rehabilitation Engineering discipline of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology is striving for higher goals.
